PAES aims to provide a holistic, enriching educational experience that caters to the diverse needs of its student body.

Classes

We currently have several Reading and Math programs along with some additional classes: Music, Art, Science and PE each student attends once a week.

Eureka Math

Eureka Math² is a revolutionary math program designed to ensure that students build enduring math knowledge through the intentional integration of digital resources and a focused approach to encouraging student discourse.

English Language Arts

We adopt the standards-aligned EL Education K-8 Language Arts curriculum, one of several open educational resources designed for the science of how students learn to read.

SIPPS

SIPPS® is a research-based foundational skills program proven to help both new and struggling readers in grades K–12, including English learners and students identified with dyslexia.

Reading Intervention

We ensure all students are achieving grade-level reading. Students in the program work one-on-one with instructor volunteers from P.A.R.T (Piedmont Avenue Reading Tutors). Teachers refer students to the reading intervention program based on students’ reading assessments.

Full Option Science System

FOSS promotes language arts and literacy skills through academic discussions, reading the Science Resource textbooks, notebooking, building vocabulary and strengthening both speaking and listening skills.

Art

Students from TK-2nd grade will be able to explore the world around them, express their ideas, and process their thoughts through an exciting art curriculum. They will learn the basics of drawing, painting, collage, printing, and sculpture through lesson plans with a history and social justice background.

Music

OUSD has worked to ensure that every student in our district experiences the joy, creativity, and collaboration at the root of culturally-responsive music education. Students in upper grades learn on instruments.

Cantare Con Vivo

PTA Sponsored music program fosters a love for vocal music. Cantare’s experienced teaching artists teach through meaningful, enriching music making, to build fundamental musical skills and appreciation for music from diverse cultures.

Physical Education

PE is a weekly class for all grades. Our P.E. coach plans meaningful outdoor activities and collaborative games.

C.L.A.S.S. Before & After School Program

MOSAIC

Mosaic is outstanding at promoting peace, empathy, and conflict resolution among its 4th and 5th grade participants.

AAFE

AAFE makes OUSD the first school district ever to focus on the specific upliftment and support of Black girls as a city-wide strategy. Part of OUSD’s Office of Equity, AAFE currently serves over 300 girls in multiple Elementary, Middle & High Schools across Oakland.

AAMA

The Office of African American Male Achievement was launched in 2010 and creates the systems, structures, and spaces that guarantee success for all African American male students in OUSD.

African Dance

African Dance with Mr. Pope meets before school where students dance to the rhythms of the drum and learn ancestral African dances. Read more about Mr. Pope and all he does for the community.

Additional Programs & Support

We have several programs at Piedmont Avenue Elementary for children with different abilities.

Transitional Kindergarten

(TK) curriculum revolves around building early academic and social skills, with a particular emphasis on play-based learning and emotional intelligence.

Autism Inclusion Program

These students are integrated into mainstream classes with appropriate adaptations of curriculum, materials and support staff.

Resource specialist program

This program is designed to identify and serve students with average and above average potential but who have a learning disability. The Resource Specialist and/or Instructional Aide provide support and appropriate academic interventions so that these students may find academic success in the regular education program.

Speech Services

A speech-language therapist is available on site. Please share any speech concerns you may have with your child’s teacher who can refer a child for next steps. Qualifying students receive therapy to address speech-language disorders.

Mental Health Support

The first line of support for a child experiencing signs of stress is to work with the classroom teacher to ensure that the classroom community including peers and adults in the classroom are addressing the child’s emotional needs.
